How I keep up with the Web

Well, it all starts with Twitter. Although I also use Google Reader, Twitter has become my industry stream of information. I glance through and either save as favorite or click through and read immediately. International and domestic news fall into the immediate category where as industry news/discussions/tutorials fall into favorites. Besides following industry leaders, I've saved some hash tag searches of topics I'm interested in, i.e. #webstandards. I go through my favorites once a week, as many as time allows, and save the best in delicious.

My next step is books; CSS, HTML, PHP, Drupal, usability, web analytics, business books on freelancing. This is going to date me but I like the tactility of a printed book and enjoy flipping through the pages. I also enjoy seeing my favorite books lined up on the bookshelf above my desk. It is reassuring to me that I have all that information at the tips of my fingers should my mind go blank on occasion.

My current reading list is:
Archived webinars have been helpful too. Even if I am able to attend the live event, sometimes the topics are over my head and doing a bit of background research before viewing a second time has been a great learning tool.

Last but not least, I enjoy my lunches with my compatriots at Lunch Ann Arbor Marketing (LA2M, Wednesdays) and at Ann Arbor Bi Bim Bop (A2B3, Thursdays). Ann Arbor is a wonderful hotbed of entrepreneurs and technology geeks. These two groups offer me a chance to get out and expand my horizons. Often there is a humoristic undertone that makes it all the more fun. I might not make them every week but I keep up via the web.

Hopefully these methods of keeping up with the Web can help you too. And if you are Ann Arbor, come join us for lunch Wednesdays or Thursdays, the more the merrier.
